Red Meat FTW

A little known fact amongst my family and friends is that I absolutely love red meat. Nothing makes me happier than when a nice big juicy steak gets laid out in front of me. There is just something about it that makes me drool. Even the thought of it right now is just making my mouth water! I really wish mum would stop cooking so many chicken meals and get back into barbecuing some steak - I don’t have it nearly enough these days!

The other night, we had a little gathering at our house after my dad decided to be a gumby and bog his tractor and his car down in our back paddock. We spent the whole day getting bogged and unbogged and blah blah blah and at the very end of the day we all sat down to some Chilli Con Carne and flapped our gums. One of the topics of conversation was, in fact, slaughtering beasts. I boldly proclaimed that, if I had to, I would be able to slaugther a beast, skin it, gut it and make it into some nice juicy steak. Of course the boys scoffed and told me saying it was a lot different to experiencing it but the fact of the matter is - I’m about as far from a vegetarian as, to put it really lamely, a t-rex. When I was 10, I walked in on my grandad on their farm beheading some chooks and it didn’t affect me in the slightest.

The way I see it - it’s not cruel to kill the animal if you plan on using it resourcefully. Of course, I would consider it cruel if you killed them in the most inconvenient way possible. For example, stringing them up still alive, slit their throat and let them bleed while still kickin’ sort of thing. Not only does this make the meat tougher, but the animal shouldn’t have to experience that sort of pain when there are way easier, faster and convenient methods out there. My dad was telling me how when he was a boy they just used to throw some bread on the ground and put a bullet clean through the brain. It’s quick, easy and virtually painless - the beast doesn’t know what’s hit it quite literally.

Anyway, this entry isn’t supposed to be about the methods of killing animals. It’s simply to say…I love meat and am not afraid to do the dirty deeds to get it.

Are you a vegetarian? If not, how far are you willing to go to have your beloved red meat?

My First Day

I had planned to make this entry a vlog one since they seem to be all the trend (LOL) but no…its not. A simple good old text entry is what you’re going to get!

So, yesterday was my first day of University as a part-time student. And it was amazing! High school sucks in comparison by far. I’m not just talking about the fact that you don’t have to wear a uniform..I’m talking about everything. It’s so much more sophisticated, advanced and mature. A breath of fresh air from the school where spitballs are commonly found on whiteboards and the middle school toilet doors don’t lock (ew). It was such a tease! Like a little sneak peek into the world I’m meant for, but not officially going to be apart of until next year (GAH).

So anyway, I had never made it to the orientations (stupid, I know) so I didn’t know this campus from a bar of soap. My mum was supposed to come with me to fork out the cash for my textbooks (ha) but there turned out to be absolutely NO parking whatsoever. Everywhere was full. And so, she simply left me out the front of the building to fend for myself (I make it sound so much worse than it was…my mum was actually very sorry she had to leave me) and I ended up asking some people how the hell you actually get inside the campus. They were kind enough to show me to the Bray Center Student Centre where I was fitted with an ID card (which looks absolutely terrible by the way! Never have I had such a bad photo!). After this, I had about 40 minutes until my first lecture so I went exploring.

First things first…find out where the bathrooms are. I was amazed..so CLEAN, so STYLISH, so ADVANCED! The taps were sensored….all you had to do was swipe your hand and they turned on. Heck yes! After this little encounter, I explored further into the campus where I found the library. Since I work in a library, this was a very important part of the discovery and my god was I impressed! University libraries are amazing! Not even kidding - they’re HUGE. I even got a little lost in the mazes of journals. In other words? HEAVEN.

Lets skip ahead a little further…my lecture. There are at least 100 other people in my lecture class and it was a little daunting sitting there with all those older people around me all seeming so much more sophisticated than me. I was like “GAH!” and kept my head down. My lecturer is really nice though and I really look forward to my Semester with her. After my lecture, I had an hour to spare so I ate some food and sat and listened to my iPod because I didn’t bring my laptop and didn’t have a textbook to read over…great. But I think I blended in sitting on the floor against a wall where various other students were lazing. I was totally chilled and nobody guessed I was 16 until I told them. I felt VERY grown up.

My tutorial class is really cool. It’s small and personal and I like it a lot so far. My tutor is really nice and the people in the class are also really cool. I’ve definitely found some people to chill with I think. I also got very into the discussion we were having on different news types etc…etc…. Oh, for those of you that didn’t know…I’m doing a Bachelor of Journalism bahaha.

My first day as a uni student went splendid. Expect more entries on this subject!

You Are Not Dumb!

This is an issue so many people get confused on. A lot of people often think the only way you can be smart is if you get A+s are school and are on the debating team and have joined the chess club. This is not true at all. There are many different types of smart and it makes me very upset when people call themselves dumb.

A lot of my friends at school often request my help with their assignments etc… because I’m “smart”. And then, after I’ve helped them, they go on to say “OMG April, you’re so smart! I’m so dumb!” And this makes me so mad. Yes, I am academically smart but you are not dumb. Just because you aren’t good at maths or english or whatever, it doesn’t make you dumb - it’s just not your “thing”. You don’t have to do well at school to be smart. For example, I may be academically smart but I am terribly slow…I get a joke way later than everyone else and sometimes what people say to me doesn’t register until five seconds later. I am thick. Who cares? It’s just not my thing to be quick on my feet and witty and I don’t really mind.

My work colleague has a really hard time spelling…and she works in a library. She’s smart but just not a very good speller. Another one of my friends finds school really hard but give her some hairspray and a makeup kit and she’ll create a swan out of even the ugliest of ducklings. Being smart isn’t just about academics - you can be smart in so many different ways. My dad isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer but he’s great at his job and other practical stuff that I can’t even fantasize doing without getting confused. There are so many different kinds of smart and just because someone can’t spell “antidisestablishmentarianism” it doesn’t mean you can look down on them as though they are the shit on the bottom of your shoe.

I hate seeing “smart” people look down on those that ask them for help / aren’t academically smart and treat them like shit. It doesn’t make anyone feel better about themselves by not encouraging them or being nice to them. People gain serious self-esteem issues from it and it’s just not fair. Academics isn’t everything and the sooner snobs out there realise that, the better.

Next time someone tells you that they’re dumb…punch them in the face and tell them that they are not dumb. You’ll make someone’s day

So Where Does It End?

The internet as we know it is a huge online community where anything and everything is possible. But, where does fantasy end and reality begin? What lengths are you willing to go to on the internet to have your say, to have your place and be noticed? For me, I go as far as owning my own website, posting at a few webforums and generally just surfing the net being awesome. For other people, they become hackers, gamers, or Anons - or maybe all 3. They jump to the next level of extremity and this is where things become controversial. Just because somebody is a hacker - it does not mean they use their talent maliciously. Just because someone is a gamer - it doesn’t make them a teenager with acne, braces and the king of wanking. However an Anon, they are the most controversial of all. Who is Anon? What is their purpose? Why are they Anon?

Anon can be anything, anyone and anywhere. One of the largest Anon communities to this day is the notorious 4chan Imageboard. I’ve only recently become aware of this site and it makes me wonder how I’ve been in the dark for so long. This forum is not for the weak hearted - it really shows just what the internet and the real world is capable of. This website is what blurs the lines between reality and fantasy..what is real and what is fake…who is who and what is what. It opens our eyes to real life stuff that may as well just be a fantasy.

Being Anon can give you a delicious variety of delights without suffering the consequences…unless you’re stupid and can’t use Anon properly. Then - you get found out and revenge is imminent. To use Anon correctly, you need to know all the tricks of the trade. You need to master the art of Anon.

However, by being Anon comes another label…Sadistic. Many Anons use their power to post some of the most sadistic content known to man, and this reputation preceeds all Anons. It’s like in Stephen King’s book “Cell” - the flock was a whole but they spoke through one phone-crazy. One title. One purpose. People associate Anon with “Bad”, “Taboo” and “Dangerous” and Anons become controversial. By being Anon, you aren’t afraid to show your identity, more doors simply open through the title of Anonymity.

The sole purpose of Anon is to promote a very controversial opinion or engage in a very controversial act. The title of Anon, when used correctly, bypasses many consequences that could come from voicing their opinion or something of the like. Many legal repercussions are avoided through Anon and this allows humanity to be more than a flock of sheep.

I’ve had good and bad experiences with Anons, and being Anon. A bad experience - Anon decided to post my personal contact information up. However, this Anon was foolish and didn’t protect their OWN personal contact information well enough and was exposed…he’s now dealing the consequences. =] A good experience with Anon? I’ve made a lifelong, very powerful friend. And being Anon? I’ve gained so many people’s trust and acknowledgement than I would have if they knew who I really was.

If you look under a rock you discover another world.

Have you ever been Anon or had an experience with Anon?

As you may have gathered from the title, this blog entry is based on a fresh new sound hitting the streets of Brisbane in brute force. Novella Beggars is an upcoming band formed early December last year and their music is amazing. Of course, you may consider me biased since my ((lover)) is the lead vocalist and guitarist.

Below is an embedded sound clip that I really think you guys should listen to…they’re an Indie/Punk Rock band and the song name is Only Ever, and based on the recent experiences the lead singer and his lover *cough* went through.

And, if you really enjoyed that song…more of their music can be listened to at their myspace page, Novella Beggars.

Soundwave 2010: Best Day of My Life

For those of you that don’t know, Soundwave is a rock/metal music festival here in Australia. I went to it this year and it was the most amazing experience of my life. The bands were amazing and I moshed like a crazy girl. My favourite performance, by far, would have to be Jimmy Eat World. I was there with my ex-boyfriend and they played some of our songs and well…it ended up in us bawling our eyes out, cuddling and promising that at the end of the year, we would officially get back together. Why the end of the year? Because senior year is no time for relationships. But of course, that hasn’t stopped us from pretending we are already back together haha. As you can see in the picture, we were about 20m away from the band and they were absolutely amazing! One of the best live performances of the day DEFINITELY!!

This picture depicts Jordan and I moshing to Jimmy Eat World bahaha. It was so amazing. We were so close to them and the energy was amazing. Just watching them perform was mind blowing and being so close was just GAH. One of the experiences never to be replicated, I’m almost 100% sure of…and the fact that they brought Jordan and I back together is just amazing…thank you, Jimmy Eat World, thank you.

Oh yeah! That’s right, I met You Me at Six. Jordan just spotted them beside the signing tent and stopped mid-sentence to run over and grab him. It was quite funny. He seemed more than happy (obviously) to pose for pictures with Jordan and Lincoln and then, once Jordan had caused a ruckus other people realised who he was and started coming over. They left then, in quite a hurry bahaha. One of the priceless quotes from Jordan was, “Seeing them brings my accent back!” to which he then spoke in his beautiful british accent the rest of the day.

I had tickets to get signings from Taking Back Sunday, Motion City Soundtrack, You Me at Six and Enter Shikari but I missed out! I was so bummed. I gave my Motion City Soundtrack ticket to Lincoln…they’re his all-time favourite band so I figured it a much better experience for him. He hasn’t stopped thanking me (BLAH) lol. But still, an amazing day and so much more to talk about but I better just talk about the last main point of the day…

I saw Placebo up close. And I even had their drumstick in my hand but some selfish bastard snatched it from me. :( I didn’t give up without a fight though and it ended with me on the ground being trod on right in the middle of a mosh! Oh dear baha. That doesn’t come close to my severely injured nose in Dance Gavin Dance mosh pit though…I bled all over my amazing Chuck Taylors. :( Oh well, war wounds from Soundwave…I’m glad the stains aren’t coming out of the canvas bahaha.

Well, that was my amazing day and night. For more pictures go to my Soundwave 2010 Flickr Set and check them out.

Warning: Learner Driver on the Road

So, on Valentines Day my family had a get-together due to the day also being my mum’s birthday. I have some great relatives that are always willing to lend a hand so when I told them of my predicament where I’d had my learners for 6 months and only had 10 hours they were more than too happy to help me get some more!

The first volunteer? My beautiful aunty Brat. She was kind enough to even lend me her car to drive. The outcome? I nearly killed us both. I believe I really need to work on braking. As we were approaching the intersection to cross the highway, I was only lightly tapping my foot on the brake and nearly drove out onto the highway into oncoming traffic. My god, my aunt practically shouted at me to stop the car. Tyres squealed and my eyes nearly popped out of my head in surprise and shock. What do you expect from a learner that hasn’t been on the road in months?? So yes, definitely need to work on my braking. I returned her home safe and jittery with vows to never let me drive her around again.

The second volunteer? My cool uncle Jimmy. Their car is an automatic so it was a bit different and a little easier except, I nearly slid out going around a corner too quickly. Second thing to work on? My speed. I returned him home safe and slightly miffed. Unfortunately, both of these incidents cost me family driving instructors. How am I going to get better if I don’t learn??

>_< Anyone else had any learner driving woes?
