You Are Not Dumb!

This is an issue so many people get confused on. A lot of people often think the only way you can be smart is if you get A+s are school and are on the debating team and have joined the chess club. This is not true at all. There are many different types of smart and it makes me very upset when people call themselves dumb.

A lot of my friends at school often request my help with their assignments etc… because I’m “smart”. And then, after I’ve helped them, they go on to say “OMG April, you’re so smart! I’m so dumb!” And this makes me so mad. Yes, I am academically smart but you are not dumb. Just because you aren’t good at maths or english or whatever, it doesn’t make you dumb - it’s just not your “thing”. You don’t have to do well at school to be smart. For example, I may be academically smart but I am terribly slow…I get a joke way later than everyone else and sometimes what people say to me doesn’t register until five seconds later. I am thick. Who cares? It’s just not my thing to be quick on my feet and witty and I don’t really mind.

My work colleague has a really hard time spelling…and she works in a library. She’s smart but just not a very good speller. Another one of my friends finds school really hard but give her some hairspray and a makeup kit and she’ll create a swan out of even the ugliest of ducklings. Being smart isn’t just about academics - you can be smart in so many different ways. My dad isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer but he’s great at his job and other practical stuff that I can’t even fantasize doing without getting confused. There are so many different kinds of smart and just because someone can’t spell “antidisestablishmentarianism” it doesn’t mean you can look down on them as though they are the shit on the bottom of your shoe.

I hate seeing “smart” people look down on those that ask them for help / aren’t academically smart and treat them like shit. It doesn’t make anyone feel better about themselves by not encouraging them or being nice to them. People gain serious self-esteem issues from it and it’s just not fair. Academics isn’t everything and the sooner snobs out there realise that, the better.

Next time someone tells you that they’re dumb…punch them in the face and tell them that they are not dumb. You’ll make someone’s day smile
